About BIODE
Environmental problems in industrial settings are process problems. We're trained to solve both.
BIODE Engineering Consulting was founded in 2018 around a specific observation: most industrial environmental compliance failures have a technical root cause that generic environmental consulting doesn't reach. Permit exceedances, authorization delays, and unsustainable resource consumption are rarely isolated regulatory problems — they reflect gaps in process understanding, instrumentation, or operational control.
We built BIODE to operate at that intersection. Our practice combines environmental regulatory expertise with process engineering depth and applied data analysis — allowing us to engage with industrial facilities at the level where problems actually originate, not just where they surface. We work with clients across Quebec and Canada, across sectors where that combination of capabilities is consequential: food and beverage processing, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, metal fabrication, and others.
Our clients have avoided seven-figure capital proposals and recovered over $180,000 in annual savings through this approach. The compliance gain and the operational gain were, each time, a single intervention.
Our approach is rigorous, direct, and independent. We don't represent equipment vendors or have preferred solutions. Every engagement starts with understanding your specific facility, your specific constraints, and your specific regulatory exposure.
Steven Reiter, P.Eng.
President & Principle Engineer
Steven's background is deliberately cross-domain. He trained in mechanical and systems engineering at McGill University, then worked across industrial automation, biomechanics research, and environmental engineering before founding BIODE. That trajectory is not incidental — it means he approaches industrial environmental problems with the diagnostic instincts of a process engineer and the regulatory fluency of an environmental specialist, a combination that's uncommon in either discipline alone.
In practice, this translates to engagements where the environmental compliance question and the operational performance question are addressed together — because in most industrial facilities, they're the same question asked from different angles. Steven has worked directly with municipal and provincial regulators, building technical files that resolve complex authorization questions and establish durable compliance positions for his clients.

Maria Abdelali, PhD.
Cofounder & Senior Environmental Consultant
Maria holds dual doctorates in physics and fluid mechanics and in biomedical engineering from Polytechnique Montréal. Her research background in computational fluid dynamics, multiphysics simulation, and image-based flow analysis gives BIODE an unusually rigorous analytical foundation for problems involving fluid behavior — which, in industrial environmental work, means wastewater treatment dynamics, atmospheric dispersion, ventilation characterization, and process flow optimization.
Where most environmental consultants apply empirical rules of thumb, Maria builds models. That distinction matters when a regulatory reviewer pushes back on your assumptions, or when a treatment system behaves in ways your vendor's design didn't anticipate.
